This week Dr. Toomas Särev offers us the treatment for last week's diagnosis. If "fine" is the symptom, listening is the cure — but not the kind of listening where you wait for someone to finish so you can say what you were already thinking. As Toomas puts it, good people cause most of the conflict in healthcare, and they do it by talking too soon. The instinct to help is so strong that we rush to fix before we've truly understood, and the result is that people learn to give us the version of reality we can handle, rather than the real one. This week's experiment is Two Ears, One Mouth — honour the ratio. Pick one conversation where trust matters, listen twice as much as you speak, and use your words only to reflect back what you heard, clarify what you missed, or ask a genuinely curious question. When you run out of questions, use just three words: "And what else?" — ask it three times and sit in the silence, because that's often where trust is built. Save any advice for the last 60 seconds. As Toomas reminds us, the most precise instrument you own is not your clinical knowledge or your experience — it is your attention.
